Estimating the mean ocean-bay exchange rate of the Chesapeake Bay
نویسنده
چکیده
[1] A model of the salt balance in the Chesapeake Bay is discussed, which takes into account only time-dependent riverine input and mean ocean-bay exchange. Estimates of (spatial) mean bay salinity are made using two different data sources: a 16 year record of surveys taken by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Chesapeake Bay Program, and a 10 year record of hydrographic sections taken in the lower bay by the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography at Old Dominion University. Using United States Geological Survey river flow data to force the model, both data sets are consistent with this simple model and both imply a mean oceanic exchange (e-folding) timescale of 90 days, which is equivalent to an effective exchange rate of roughly 8 10 m s .

a r t i c l e i n f o This study evaluates the performance of ocean color products derived from measurements of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the satellite Aqua using the standard near-infrared (NIR) and the shortwave infrared (SWIR)-based atmospheric correction algorithms in the Chesapeake Bay. The MODIS-Aqua-derived normalized water-leaving radiances, nL w (λ), ...

Scientists use sophisticated numerical models to study ocean circulation and other physical systems, but the complex nature of such simulation software generally make them inaccessible to non-expert users. In principle, however, numerical models represent an ideal teaching tool, allowing users to model the response of a complex system to changing conditions. We have designed an interactive simu...

Pomfrets are one of the most ample high priced fisheries of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. The present study featuring the comparison of the life history parameters of three Pomfrets i.e. Silver (Pampus argenteus), Chinese (P. chinensis) and Black (Parastromateus niger) is based on the monthly length frequency data from the commercial landings from July 2015 through June 2016. The length (TL) o...
متن کاملOceanic migration rates of Upper Chesapeake Bay striped bass ( Morone saxatilis ) , determined by otolith microchemical analysis
As an estuarine-dependent species, striped bass (Morone saxatilis) demonstrate large plasticity in migration patterns (Secor and Piccoli, 1996). Striped bass in Chesapeake Bay are partial migrants; only a fraction of individuals will leave estuarine habitats for oceanic waters (Kohlenstein, 1981). Never the less, Chesapeake Bay striped bass are the major contributors to interjurisdictional ocea...
